National Leprosy Eradication Programme
Meghalaya achieved the goal of elimination in the year 2000 with the introduction of Multi Drug Therapy (MDT) in NLEP.
Leprosy in Meghalaya is very low endemic with the Prevalence Rate (PR) of less than 1(one) case per 10,000 population and we have been able to maintain the Prevalence Rate below 1(one) case per 10,000 population. We have 88 (eighty eight) cases under treatment as on 31st March 2011 and a Prevalence Rate of 0.23 per 10,000 population.
The two main objectives of the State are:
(I) To “reduce further the Burden of Leprosy Disease”:
- Early detection of new cases and treatment with MDT shall reduce the incidence and burden of leprosy in the state
- By preventing disability in new cases and rehabilitation of cases with disability and also by fighting stigma wherever it exists.
- By increasing awareness campaign to reduce stigma and discrimination against the leprosy affected person (LAP).
(II) Quality of Leprosy Services.
